Around 200 advisors and industry insiders gathered in midtown Manhattan in October for AdvisorHub’s first event, “An Industry in Transition: Expert Solutions to Advisor Challenges.”
The half-day event covered topics from the Department of Labor’s fiduciary rule to planning for succession and the sale of brokerage practices. Stifel Chairman & CEO Ron Kruszewski, OppenheimerFunds practice management guru Paul Blease, and Ritholtz Wealth Management Chief Executive Josh Brown were principal speakers.
Ron Kruszewski: State of the Industry, Challenges Facing Advisors and Future Direction
In his keynote address, Kruszewski took an impassioned stand on how the Department of Labor’s fiduciary rule should be reconfigured and urged advisors to be wary of how some broker-dealers may employ technology to “build a wall” between them and their clients.
Paul Blease: Growing Your Practice in Challenging Times
Thirty-year industry veteran Paul Blease of OppenheimerFunds gave actionable tips for how to grow a practice without getting lost in the day-to- day challenges of running a business.
The event concluded with a “fireside” chat and presentation from Josh Brown, who in addition to being chief executive at Ritholtz also authors an investment blog, “The Reformed Broker.” Brown as well as AdvisorHub chief executive Tony Sirianni shared their thoughts on topics from the fiduciary rule to advisor compensation as part of a “no boundaries” discussion.
