Maura Markus currently serves on the Boards of Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc., NYSE: BR, (2013 – present), where she is a member of the Audit and Compensation Committees and Stifel Financial Corp. NYSE: SF, (2016 – present) where she is Chairwoman of the Corporate Governance & Nominating Committee, and a member of the Audit Committee.
Maura is a global financial services executive having served as President and COO, for Bank of the West and Citigroup running their Retail Banking, Small Business & Wealth Management businesses, both domestically and internationally. She guides businesses and senior management teams to achieve growth and competitive industry positioning in dynamic global markets. She co-founded professional networking groups for women both domestically and internationally. Maura is also a speaker on business and board leadership, as well as, diversity.
From 2010 to 2014, Maura served as President, Chief Operating Officer, and as a Board Director, at Bank of the West. She was also a member of the Board of Directors of BancWest Corporation and on the Bank’s Executive Management Committee and a member of the Financial Services Roundtable. She led the key businesses of the Regional BankingGroup, comprised of more than 550 branches in 19 states providing financial services to consumers, small to medium-sized businesses, and the Wealth Management Group, which was in the midst of a major transformation and growth phase.
Maura was also responsible for Digital Channels, a strategic growth area for the bank, and Marketing, where an award-winning Go West branding campaign significantly raised Bank of the West’s visibility and awareness ratings. Bank of the West grew from approximately $57.7B in total assets, year-end 2010, to approximately $71.7B in total assets, by year-end 2014.
Before joining Bank of the West, Maura was a 22-year veteran of Citigroup. She served as Executive Vice President, Head of International Retail Banking in Citi’s Global Consumer Group, from 2007 to 2009, leading a $15B revenue, $2.7B net income business across 43 countries and overseeing operations with $190B in deposits, $130B in AUM’s, and 3,500 branches. She held a number of additional domestic and international management positions including President, Citibank North America from 2000 to 2007. In this position, she also served as Chairwomen of Citibank West. Additionally, Maura led international banking operations as Citi’s European Sales and Marketing Director in Brussels, Belgium, and as President of Citi’s consumer business in Athens, Greece.
Maura has been named multiple times as one of American Banker’s Most Powerful Women in Banking. She has also been recognized as one of The Most Influential Women in Business by San Francisco Business Times, where she was also selected for its Forever Influential Honor Roll. Maura is a current member of Women Corporate Directors San Francisco and International Women’s Forum Northern California.
Among her numerous community interests, she is a Trustee of College of Mount St. Vincent in New York, and a member of Year Up San Francisco Bay Area Talent and Opportunity Board. She is a former board member of Catholic Charities New York and San Francisco, and Junior Achievement New York.
Maura graduated summa cum laude from Boston College with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. She also holds a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
